The first day at a new job is an unforgettable experience. Let's just say mine at the Auto Shop was less than ideal.
Tony truly is an awesome boss. However, his methods of teaching are a little... Different, shall we say. I started working for him back in the fall of 2009, and as a young, still in highschool kid, I had never learned how to use a ratchet wrench, much less work on automobiles. I don't even know why Tony hired me really. I had no experience and could only work a few hours a week.
Maybe it was the fact I was working for free....
Or it could have been sympathy.
Whatever the case, he did hire me to work there and allowed me to restore my car in his shop. I'll never forget that first day. I strolled in around 9:00am, expected to be given an orientation on what Tony expected, what he was going to show me, etc. Instead, he handed me a wrench and some keys and said "There's a Mercedes Benz out front, the black one, pull that around and change the spark plugs and the oil."
I stood there kinda shocked and dumbly said, "Can you show me where the sparkplugs are?"
"After you pull the car around and get it open, sure." Tony replied
So I, a 17 year old guy with minimal driving experience, got into the $30,000+ car and terrified I would bump it into something, pulled it into the shop. It took about 20 min I was going so slow. After another 10 minutes, I finally figured out how to open the hood. Tony showed me where the spark plugs were, and explained how they worked with the timing system. I of course asked what the timing system was, which he went on to explain that as well. It is now 10:00 and I finally had a tool in hand ready to do... something. Tony went back into the office.
I still don't know what he did in there all day.
So a little more confident, now knowing what exactly to remove, I located a socket, and then proceeded to figure out how exactly the wrench worked. Sounds dumb, but it did take me a few minutes. I proceeded to remove one sparkplug. Pulling it out made me feel so victorious. I had five more to go... On plug number 3, I broke it. Granted it was a bad plug and was going to be tossed, but is was quite embarrassing for me. Thankfully, nothing dropped into the engine itself. That would have made for a worse day for sure.
Around noon, I had gotten four plugs out. Tony came in to check on me, commented on the broke plug, and told me to take lunch. So I did, and got back to it around 12:30. Finally, around 1:30, I had removed all six plugs. Now, heheh, I just had to put the new ones in. At 3:00, six hours later, I finally had successfully changed all the plugs in the mercedes, and not lost track of the timing wires. (A plug job takes me now about 30-45 minutes, which is the standard speed.)
Tony came in, checked what I had done, then said to change the oil. This is where the first flashback lesson comes in. In my arrogant little mind, I instantly thought "Haha! I changed the plugs perfectly (even if it took a little longer than normal), and I know how to change the oil. Piece of cake." How does that saying go again? Pride before the fall? Well, I removed the plug, drained the old oil, and removed the old filter. I forgot oil would still be in the filter, and because of that dumped it all over my shirt.
The new filter and oil came in a bit later, so now it is about 4:00pm. An hour left until the day is over. I checked the ring on the oil filter, screwed it in, and poured the oil into the engine as proud as could be. I mean, hey, I got a whole car done in a single day. Without wasting any parts or breaking any tools. I was feeling pretty sure of myself, completely missing how badly I had performed in hours/labor.
Then Tony walked in, I remember this like it was yesterday.... He looks under the car, and asks...
"You put the plug back in?"
Ever have that moment of complete and undeniable stupidity founded in arrogance? That was me. Right then, my little image of "master mechanic" was crushed like a car compactor in a junk yard. I had forgotten to put the pan plug back in, and had proceeded to pour four quarts of brand new oil all over the shop floor. I was devastated. I knew right then, I was going to get fired on my first day. I was a horrid mechanic. I couldn't even change the stinking oil without wasting money!
And then Tony said something which has stuck to me this day. He is not a believer, he rejects Christ, but what he said was something which had the incredible qualities of grace.
"Well, clean it up and try again, this time with the plug in."
He didn't get mad, he didn't fuss at me, he didn't even make me pay for the oil (I tried). He didn't tell me to stop working. In fact, he made a joke out of the situation, and told me to try again.
Tony may not be wise in the ways of the Lord, which saddens me immensely. But he is wise in the ways of leadership and direction. Which got me, because when I make a mistake, too often I am quick to snap at them and make sure they never forget the wrong they did. Tony taught me that day, my first day, you are going to make mistakes. Your employees are going to make mistakes, and lots of them. He, a non-believer, choose to show grace and patience. While I, a professing Christian, was (and still am) short and quick to punish. That first day I was not only ashamed of the lack of my skill, but more-so at the fact God had to use one who blasphemes Him daily to teach me just how messed up I still was and am.
Everyday I have to clean it up and try again. How about you?

Combating Women in Combat
Yes, I am responding to current events with a blog post. It seems to be happening more and more of late.
I say this because I see nowhere in scripture a precedent placed that it is a woman's role to go out and fight for her country or family. It is clearly, the man's role and job to defend his family. I see today, a society shirking off that responsibility in the name of equality. Guess what? Men and women aren't the same. They have different God-given Strengths and weaknesses. This is a good thing! Instead of celebrating these differences, we see a society rejecting God's perfect design, and replacing it with what they deem best.
"Uh Austin?" You say. "What about Deborah?"
Women did indeed have roles other than wife in scripture.... Specifically to this topic of leadership and war.
We see first, and most famously, Esther. Who was made queen in a time of jewish captivity, and used that political power to save the jewish race.
We see Deborah, made judge and leader of the military in the darkest time of the jewish people. Why? Because there were no men to fill the position.
Also in Judges, we see Jael, the wife of Heber, let the commander of the Caanaite army into her tent, and then killed him in his sleep, as God predicted.
I am sure you have heard of the Pentagon's most recent change in policy. That of allowing women to take positions of combat should they desire, or show above average qualifications.
Before I go into the following... I'm going to tell you I don't think the only place for women is at home. I believe places in business, politics, and other societal areas are fine for women to participate in. I don't think scripture calls women to be only ones who are "Barefoot, Pregnant, and in the Kitchen."
The following points come as always, based off scripture. You can argue all day about physical prowess and scientific comparison of male/female body types... And both have valid points. Problem is, if you base your arguments upon these facts, you are simply debating scientific viewpoints. These are not what we should base our opinions on, because our understanding of science is always changing.
Before I go into the following... I'm going to tell you I don't think the only place for women is at home. I believe places in business, politics, and other societal areas are fine for women to participate in. I don't think scripture calls women to be only ones who are "Barefoot, Pregnant, and in the Kitchen."

Personally, I think it if fine if a woman wants a domestic intelligence job, and can do it well, let he work there. My personal line comes up when they can be placed into combat, on the ground, situations. The recent decision does not place women in combat role, but rather, allows them to volunteer to do so. I do not believe at all in any way women should have, or be allowed to have, a role in combat.

The Dash of Stan the Man Musial
Whenever a personal hero of mine passes, I am reminded of a poem. Stan Musial died a few days ago at the old age of 92. For those who don't know, he was a man of character, integrity, and humility. He was a continuing bright light in all of baseball both on the field and off.
He was a gentleman, and left quite the legacy and example to follow for those who play sports.
Deaths like these remind me of this poem, ironically written by an athlete himself. What dash am I creating? How will people remember my dash? Is it reflecting Christ? Is it a Biblical example? I pray and hope so. It reminds me it doesn't matter how long you live, but how you live in the time God has given you.
So with that, here is possibly my favorite poem of all time. It doesn't have perfect pentameter, nor does it completely rhyme. But poetry is more than just meter and verse. It is an expression of thought, and this he does quite well.
The Dash
I have seen death stare at me with my own eyes in a way many cannot know.
I’ve seen death take others but still leave here below.
I’ve heard many screams of mother cries but death has refused to hear.
In my life I have seen many faces with many, many tears.
After death has come and gone, a tombstone sits for many to see,
But is serves no more than a symbol of a person’s memory.
Under the person’s name it reads the date of birth-and the date the person passed,
But the more I think about the tombstone the only important thing is the dash.
Yes, I see the name of the person but that I might forget,
I also read the date of birth and death, but even that might not stick.
But thinking about the person, I can’t help but to remember the dash,
Because it represents a person’s life and that will always last.
So when you begin to chart your life, make sure you are on a positive path.What does your dash look like?

Another Day, Another Story
Another day has come and gone, which is pretty cool, considering everything which was accomplished and learned.
I was able to get to work on my car today, FINALLY finished the sanding of primer. We'll be shooting color in a few days! More importantly though, I talked with a guy about luck, and it was pretty interesting. The question posed on the radio was "do people make their own luck?", and we talked about that question for a while. Does luck exist? Is God luck? Why are good people unlucky? are all questions we discussed. I was able to offer scripture to a great many number questions by the grace of God, and he in turn with more questions. Not only was it productive in terms of work, but also in terms of eternity.
Do you know how to make a telegraph? I do now. In history discussion, we decided to start off the new year with a . - and gets some hands on stuff made. They worked after some finagling with the wires. Pretty cool they were! Here is a link should you desire to make one:

My bro and I got to go to a chick-fil-a that opened today! It was so fun. There were balloons, happy people, and the chick-fil-a cow (which was kinda creepy). What always amazes me about chickfila most is not the food, but the quality of service. The workers there set a standard which is so incredibly high and polite, it honestly challenges me to do the same where I work. A quality business is not just in the products they offer, but in the people they hire. Chickfila has figure that out, and as long as they keep up that service... I'll keep giving em my money.
So, just another blessed day in the life of Austin. God is so good to us, and it floors me to fathom where that goodness comes from. :)

Only Three More To Go!
Today I passed a the biggest roadblock for finishing my Degree.
The Principles of Finance DSST. Back in August, I failed it with a 391. Passing is 400.
So, a few weeks ago, I attacked it again with a vengeance. So much studying on Cost of Debt, WAAC, CAMP, TVM, and more. To be honest though, I was super stressed about going in to take it this morning.
But by the Grace of God and hard work, I passed it with a 423!
That makes three tests left for completing the BSBA in General Management. Lord willing I'll take Money and Banking next week. I've heard it is also a bugger of a test. Can't be worse than finance though. I am almost sure of it. ;)
To celebrate the passing of the test, I went out to lunch with mom. It was great to just chat and catch up over a cheeseburger. Follow that up with a sunny afternoon drive... It was a very nice way to celebrate in my opinion. It is days like these I marvel at the sheer goodness of God. :)

The Rewarded Sin
In reading Proverbs today, there was a scripture dealing with procrastination. It really got me, and it is amazing how one can read these chapters month after month... and still get something new each and every-time.
Proverbs 3:27-28
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in the power of your hand to do so. Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come back, And tomorrow I will give it,” When you have it with you.
I think this applies to procrastination in that often we have time and power to get something done, but choose not to because we would rather do something else...
I read a quote about this, and thought it was very fitting to this verse... So I made it up into a pic, to remind me how serious this action is.
I've procrastinated many times because of my laziness, but always laughed it off with a funny pic, joke, etc. The fact is, procrastination and wasting of time is not a laughing matter. Rather, as we see here, yet another sin of selfishness.
So here's to focusing time and effort into completing a task for another as fast as possible, rather than focusing on myself and putting it off till I feel like it. :)

2012. A Personal Reflection.
Years go by so quickly now, and often I forget all the happens in the past year. It is good to sit back and think about how God has blessed us and worked in various ways in times past. It is so cool to look back see the story he wove, and know he is still doing that today. So here is my personal reflection of 2012.
To be honest, 2012 started pretty normal, and became something Epic. I had studies and working on the car in the spring. That lasted throughout the year, and I have a month left, Lord willing, for both.
The first thing I remember about 2012 was attending TeenPact Staff Training in Oklahoma. The week taught me so much in learning how to lead, direct, and manage others. I also learned a ton about showing Christ in every action, and the importance of daily disciplines in spending time with him. I met some great guys there, and still talk to some today.
In March playing Ultimate Frisbee was the main event. I led a small team in our homeschool league. We came out in first place with a 9-3 record. It was a great experience of stretching my physical limits and maintaining good sportsmanship as a leader of a team. Not so much in losing, but remaining humble in the winning. Here is a video I made advertising the 2013 season.
Also in the spring I was blessed to be able to co-direct "Much ado about Nothing" with my past History Discussion teacher. She rocks and we had a lot of fun. We might be doing count of Monte Cristo this year. Really looking forward to that. All depending on finishing my degree...
I was able to staff in the TeenPact program for my state and put that training to use. Even though I felt mildy prepared, I truly did not know what was going to happen or what I was going to do, which was a huge growing experience. It stretched me spiritually and taught me about servant leadership in ways I didn't think possible. I also learned about flexibility and to enjoy the changes which God put in front of us each day. Just to make sure we knew He was ultimately in charge and not us. We did presentations, field experiences, and fellowshipped with the students. All of the activities were focused on building better servant leaders equipped to engage the culture in which they live. Some great pics and videos of that week are here:
Illinois TeenPact 2012 Memories
The Last activity of note in the Spring was going to TeenPact National Convention. If you haven't noticed, this leadership school has shaped me immensely in the past few years. We went up as a small group of friends, and came home more like brothers and sisters, with all the annoyances too. :D The theme of that year was "GO". Expounding upon the principle taught in 2011, which was actively and patiently waiting, 2012 focused on GOing and moving in the direction God is leading you. Very deep and cool stuff.
Then came Summer, and with it came Australia. Originally we planned to go to China, but it didn't work out. Australia was truly one of the most amazing experiences ever. The amount of things we saw, did, and experienced most will never do in their life time. Diving on the great barrier reef, seeing the twelve apostles, and touring the Sydney opera house were just some of the things we did. I have a few more posts about Australia I will eventually add here, but all of our adventures are tagged with "Australia" below.
Then we had to come back home and face reality once again. Fall brought to me the wall of College and needing to complete it. Quickly. So all through September, October, November, and now December I worked on Tests, courses, and finals. By the grace of God, and a lot of hard work I now only have four tests remaining. All of which I plan to complete this month. It is going to be a hard long haul, but I believe it is possible. Then I will be finished with my degree.
So there is a synopsis of 2012 and how I lived it. Very full and very rich. I feel so incredibly blessed to be living this life which has been given to me, I truly cannot wait to see what is in store for this year.

Taxes Don't Make People Poor
Kinda laxed off the past few days. Oops.
Everywhere you turn, you hear about the "Fiscal Cliff this" the "Fiscal Cliff That". America is going to end if the Fiscal cliff isn't avoided. On and on and on it goes...
I'm going to dip into a little economic rhetoric tonight, because I believe so many people have lost focus in how free market economies work. As much as media wants you to believe, the government does not (yet) control the American Economy.
The consumer's confidence does.
Let me say that again.
The American Consumer. You and I control the economy in America. What we spend ultimately determines the demand, which in turns affects production, which in turn affects business, which in turn employs us... Because we spend money.
Now, I know that is really dumbed down. I realize there are tons of factors which affect overall economic success and failure. I know regulations of government affect businesses. Interest rates, lending powers, and more. But the core concept is the fact the consumer invests his money into the economy, not withhold it based on fear. I believe we are seeing this today, specifically the Fiscal cliff. People say taxes will go up. And yes, they will. The Bush tax cuts will go away and we will have to pay a greater percentage to the government.
The solution however is not to spend less so we pay less taxes, but the opposite. We need to make and spend more money, and not be concerned about the percentage the government will get. We set that amount aside, and use what remains. That is the solution to a booming and growing economy. Making less so the government gets less hurts yourself, not the government.
So that's why I say taxes don't make you poor. You will be taxed regardless of the amount of income you have, so why not try and make as much income as possible instead of trying to stay below a certain line to avoid other taxes. That is not making money work for you, that is you working for money.
What makes people poor is spending money they don't have, not saving, and trying to avoid extra income so they don't have to pay more taxes. Taxes will always be around. Unlike england, America is a capitalistic society, we have the ability to make money. Yes right now it is difficult because of the lack of confidence. But there are jobs out there and sole proprietorships are incredibly easy to start.
It starts with a desire to work and make money. Then a desire to spend that money, simply keeping in mind the tax rate, and setting aside funds as needed for that rate.
My thoughts on the matter... How about yours?

The solution however is not to spend less so we pay less taxes, but the opposite. We need to make and spend more money, and not be concerned about the percentage the government will get. We set that amount aside, and use what remains. That is the solution to a booming and growing economy. Making less so the government gets less hurts yourself, not the government.
So that's why I say taxes don't make you poor. You will be taxed regardless of the amount of income you have, so why not try and make as much income as possible instead of trying to stay below a certain line to avoid other taxes. That is not making money work for you, that is you working for money.
What makes people poor is spending money they don't have, not saving, and trying to avoid extra income so they don't have to pay more taxes. Taxes will always be around. Unlike england, America is a capitalistic society, we have the ability to make money. Yes right now it is difficult because of the lack of confidence. But there are jobs out there and sole proprietorships are incredibly easy to start.
It starts with a desire to work and make money. Then a desire to spend that money, simply keeping in mind the tax rate, and setting aside funds as needed for that rate.

How my Christmas was spent
Kinda self-centered post, but I thought I'd share with you how my Christmas day went.
Anyone with little siblings or kids knows that feeling of being drug out of bed early in the morning to open presents. I think you officially are old when you desire to get more sleep, and wait to open presents at a more reasonable hour. Regardless, we all were up quite early and opened presents in turn first thing in the morning. It was quite enjoyable to see mom and dad's reactions when they discovered I got them gifts this year... We go in a circle, not a mad all at once dash. Makes for better pictures and more relaxing atmosphere. :)
Then we ate cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Not just any cinnamon rolls mind you, but homemade, scratch made, cooked to perfection cinnamon rolls with coffee icing. Delicious does not even begin to describe the flakey, gooey, sweet cinnamony goodness we indulged in this morning.
Things took an unexpected turn after breakfast. We had family over to celebrate with us, and they needed a ride back to Tennessee. So, since a blizzard was blowing in, dad decided to take them back before lunch. I decided to ride with him... So I spent the rest of christmas in the car. Dad and I had some awesome conversations on the way back after dropping them off. It was different, but very fun to be able to just talk for four hours without distractions.
So overall, it was an excellent day. Spent time with family in the morning, then got to talk with dad in the car. It was relaxing for sure.
While I gave a few gifts to my siblings and parents, they gifted me with some pretty incredible stuff. Every year it seems we try to out do each other in giving the best gift...
They won this year.
That is a Nikon 1 V1. I did tons of research on compact cameras, wanting DSLR quality without the size of the camera or bulk of lenses, and this is the result. I played with this all day and have to say I am nothing short of amazed at the quality of pics this thing takes. As you can tell in these, my coolpix is dying, hence the subpar pics above. Sand got in it when we went to Australia... and it is on its last leg.
To say I was shocked when I received this, would be a huge understatement.
In addition, I also received these items... (taken with my new camera. :) Still trying to get the hang of it...)

Shhhh! I can't hear the Quiet.
We live in a society of sensual stimulation and comfort. Every place you go there is music for our ears, colorful banners for our eyes, candles for our noses, and controlled climates for our bodies.
Out of all of these, I think hearing is one which is most ignored. While alone in the house today, it occurred to me to listen to the quiet.
Have you ever done that before? To turn off all music, radios, computers, etc, be still... and listen to the quiet? There are so many little background noises which we never notice, until we take a minute to hear them... Here is what I heard....
First, the breathing of our cat. It was slow, and light... until she sneezed.
Then, I heard the wind, birds, and occasional car outside. They were muffled, but always changing.
Then, I heard the hum of the refrigerator, low, but there.
The last thing I was able to hear, was something I had never heard before. The ticking of our kitchen clock. It is small, and I never knew it audibly ticked. But it does, and now that I have consciously listened to it, the clock provides a very nice beat to the house I never noticed before.
Praise the Lord for the sense of hearing. I know we are over saturated with noise these days, but try sitting and just listening to the quiet. You might be surprised at what you hear.

Turning a Normal Day into Something Abnormal
Ever have one of those days where you just have a nice, normal day in the midst of a crazy, abnormal life?
Yeah, me too.
That was today. :)
It was the standard routine of Go to work in the morning, Study all afternoon, and hang out with family in the evening.
But even a normal day... brings such abnormal occurrences. Praise God for that, because if everything did happen the same time after time... It would be a rather droll life.
For instance, at work, walk in like normal, tell my co-worker hey, and go sand on my car. Today though, I felt like I should go see how he was doing, call it a tug on my spirit. ;) So I asked him how he was doing, and turns out he had a really bad weekend. He is having issues with his wife, and needs a lot of prayer. The spirit really does lead when you listen, and it made a normal day at work a unique opportunity to minister to a fellow co-worker by listening and sharing scriptures as advice.
In studies, how can anything go abnormal in studies? I spent the majority of the day prepping for my final two DSSTs. Building outlines, collaborating resources, etc. Fairly standard. However, in the midst of planning for federal reserve effects on interest rates and values, I again felt a tug to go play with the little kids in the house. For some reason, I was listening a bit better than usual today. ;) So I took the little kids out and taught them how to throw a frisbee. It was so cool to see them try to learn what we consider a "simple" task.
I don't want this post to look like a "Look at all the good stuff I did today" post, because "I" didn't do any of that. Christ did it through me. If I hadn't listened to the tug, I would have been selfish and worked on my car that extra 30 minutes, or gotten in an extra hour of studies.
I guess what I'm saying is even a normal day can be something special if you are open to Christ's leading. I struggle with it everyday, and most of the time fail... but days like these, Christ helps me make choices not selfish, and the fruit is pretty cool.
So, I encourage you in those days of habits and schedules, make it something abnormally focused on Christ, instead of yourself, the results might surprise you.

Taking Comfort in... Motives?
I keep hearing on the news today more on the tragic shootings in Connecticut I know it is not fun to dwell on, but there was one phrase repeated over and over that perked my curiosity and made me think.
"We do not yet know the killer's motives, but will not rest until we have answers why this tragedy happened."
Isn't that a fascinating comment?
So many people today want to know why. "Why did he do what he did?" "It doesn't make sense." "It seems such a waste."
It is as if the why will provide the comfort people seek. As if knowing the man's justification will somehow make it alright.
It brings to mind a quote from the movie "The Dark Knight", regarding the motives of the sadistic killer "The Joker".

I think Alfred hit upon a key idea in this small bit of dialogue regarding the condition of humanity. To often we think we can explain away depravity with a perceived motive. Because a motive is something which can be punished. Something which can be legislated. It makes sense out of something apparently senseless.
It provides man the illusion of control over the result of the crime, thereby making an illusion of safety.
That's why these type of killings scare people so much. Because it shows the true condition of man's heart, without any provocation or motives.
It shows humanity for what it truly is without Christ. A wicked, disgusting, and evil people.
Of course, the scripture has answers for what happened. I mentioned a few days ago how all things work to God's glory, and everything does. In addition, this verse comes to mind.
Jeremiah 17:9
“The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?"
We know this happened truly because of a heart issue. A heart which was turned upon self and not to God. What I find most tragic about this event and others like it, is this truth is lost amidst the motives and earthly reasons for the crime. People miss the heart issue, which means it is just a matter of time before this happens again.
So we should pray the families and those affected find and take comfort in the Lord through this.
Not through a legal explanation (and perhaps justification) of actions.
And to also say with humble thanksgiving to our Lord.
"Save for the Grace of God go I."

The Eyes of the Lord
I and some other friends have started a challenge which goes until January 7th, 2013 to keep us from becoming lazy over the christmas season, and to increase our walk with the Lord.
So, one of those challenges is to write about some thought, event, etc and reflect on it. We are supposed to do this once a day. Whether I'll be able to or not remains to be seen, but to reflect on each day the Lord has given us is an excellent habit to make, so here goes.
I was reading Proverbs 15 today, and this verse stuck out to me.
Whether or not we will ever know why he allows certain evils to happen, that remains a mystery. We can rest in the fact though, that everything happens to His glory and plan.
Both the evil, and the good.

The Story of The Canary and the Sparrow
While working in the Shop today, I remembered a story told to me many years ago. A blast from the past you might say. I don't remember who told it, or where I heard it. It may have been from a guy's dad who used to babysit me when I was very young... Or my old Pastor from many years ago... I don't know. But it made an impression and illustrated a point which I have never forgotten.
It was supposed to be a true story. Whether it was or not, I will never know.
It goes like this...
Once, when I was younger, I had two pet canaries. One was yellow, and one was green. They sang very beautifully, and were very nice pets. They didn't peck your fingers, they didn't screech like some canaries do... They were perfect birds, and we loved to play with them.After he finished that rather somber story, I remember him saying: "When choosing your friends, scripture is so clear. Bad company corrupts good character. I have seen it happen so many times Austin. Be careful when you choose your friends."
One day I was playing outside with my brother, and we found an injured sparrow. It couldn't fly away from us, nor run. It just lay there chirping angrily at us. Its right wing and leg were broken. Heroic boys that we were, we went and got a shoebox to save it from death.
Dad got home later that evening and we proudly showed him our rescued animal. He was a good sport about it, and put the bird's leg in a little splint, and wrapped the bird's wing so it couldn't flap around. I suggested we put it in the cage with one of the canaries, so it could have company. My dad did so.
After a while, the sparrow healed, and lived in the cage with the canary. It was still a wild bird though. We could not feed it without fear of getting pecked. It also made the worst chirping noise ever. I thought it would be great to put all three birds into one large cage. That way, the two canaries would teach the sparrow how to sing, not chirp... and also how to be tame.
I was wrong.
Instead of the canaries teaching the sparrow to sing, the sparrow taught the canaries its chirp. Over the weeks, the canaries sang less and chirped more. They also stopped hopping up on our hands, and being kind birds. They pecked like the sparrow, and would fly away from us in their cage.
Horrified, my brother and I took the sparrow out of the cage after a month or so, and released it back into the wild. The thankless bird flew away without so much as a pause.
We hoped the canaries would go back to singing their songs, and being friendly, but the damage was done. Sadly, the canaries never did sing again, they only chirped like the sparrow had taught them. After a few months, we were able to get them to hop on our fingers and such... but their songs were lost.
I wanted to share that story with you, as maybe it will stick with you as it has me. Whether it really happened or not, I believe the illustration remains. Friends are important, but choose them wisely.

Election 2012: The Results and Our Role
The Presidential elections for 2012 have almost concluded. I wanted to take a minute and talk about our role in government and respect to the established authority, even if we disagree with the man who will be elected.
First, we have to keep an eternal perspective. America is not going to exist in heaven. These policies which are going to continue to change are not eternal.
Christ and His Kingdom is. Scripture declares Christ ruler over all creation. He is the true King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He deserves our service and honor more than anyone. This election doesn't change our responsibility to be a witness and live a life worthy of Christ.
This president and government is established by God. Everything is going exactly according to His plan. He wasn't surprised at the turn of the swing states, He wasn't surprised at the result of this election. He knows and has made the perfect plan of past, present, and future. We can rest in this fact.
How liberating and how we can rejoice in a God that has His divine hand over all creation and the happenings within it. He controls the flow of history, the governments, and leaders in it.
We as Christians can and should rest in the knowledge of God's sovereign and perfect plan. We also can and should remember Christ is our ultimate King, and we ultimately submit to Him.
What is our role then?
As it always has been.
We are to live for Christ, Pray for our leaders, and be a witness to others.
In the grand scheme of things, our role as Christians has not changed. This election should not distract us from our life purpose of dying to self and living for Christ.
In regard to praying for our leaders. This is a command and a responsibility we have. Regardless if we agree with them or not.
So, if you are still reading, (I am impressed to say the least) this election may impact us materially, but it cannot and should not shake us in our foundation with Christ. We need to focus not on a four year term, but an eternal plan.

We as Christians can and should rest in the knowledge of God's sovereign and perfect plan. We also can and should remember Christ is our ultimate King, and we ultimately submit to Him.

The Beautifully Ugly Cockatoo
Here in Australia, there is a very pretty looking bird.

Pretty awful right? Now, that is just one. Think of a dozen of them together.
In hearing such a beautiful bird make this awful sound, I was reminded of some scripture a few days ago, and wanted to share it with you.
The Cockatoo is a perfect example, in my opinion, of God calling us to be beautiful in spirit, and not focused on outward appearance.
I know this verse is usually applied to wives, as Paul was writing to them. However, I know I sometimes struggle with vanity, and am sure other guys care about how they look. We just care in different ways.
There are many songbirds in creation that do indeed have beautiful looks and songs. I believe a person can look nice and still have a great "Song". What is important, is we make sure we don't let our preening get in the way, or cause people to focus on something else.
We could be the sharpest looking guy, or prettiest looking gal in America, but all for naught if our heart is not beautifully turned to God. If it is, instead of prideful, irritating, and selfish "Sounds" coming out of our lives...
We will see a sweet lilting song that will bring God glory. People will want to listen, even if we aren't the best looking person around.
That bird, is called the Cockatoo.

While we regard these birds to be exotic pets in America, here in Australia, they are a native species. I have seen dozens of these birds together in flocks, eating berries off trees and nesting as a group.
One might think this is a marvelous thing.
However, unknown to many people, the Cockatoo has one of the wort bird sounds I personally ever have heard.

Pretty awful right? Now, that is just one. Think of a dozen of them together.
In hearing such a beautiful bird make this awful sound, I was reminded of some scripture a few days ago, and wanted to share it with you.
The Cockatoo is a perfect example, in my opinion, of God calling us to be beautiful in spirit, and not focused on outward appearance.
I know this verse is usually applied to wives, as Paul was writing to them. However, I know I sometimes struggle with vanity, and am sure other guys care about how they look. We just care in different ways.
1 Peter 3:3-4 Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel, rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.The Cockatoo may be one of the prettiest birds in Australia, but makes one of the worst sounds.

The big 2-0. Older, and hopefully wiser.
Since my birthday happened recently, I thought you guys might like to hear how it went and some thoughts...
Twenty sounds so much older then nineteen. This is probably because there isn't any "teen" in the number. ;)
As I shared with some of my friends on that day, being twenty makes me feel so old in some ways. I can look back and remember graduating from highschool, all the trips I have been on, and watch my younger friends graduate. I have grown so much more too in my walk with the Lord, learning things through scripture, and in my walk with other christians. All this and so much more has resulted from a truly blessed and full life.
In other ways though, I am reminded just how young I am. How much I have to learn. Both academically and spiritually. I learn new things, and gain new wisdom everyday from the bible, my parents, and others with whom I associate.
So all ramblings aside, we did do some fun stuff on my birthday.
To start if off, I was able to walk to a local coffee shop and get a Hazelnut Latte. The Cafe was called "Rocksalt" and I loved it so much I went back everyday while we were still in Brighton. :)
The remainder of the morning was spent talking and spending time with my family. We had a great devotion time, played some games, and just hung out together. :)
Lunch consisted of an extremely tasty pizza, which we ordered from an italian restaurant on the corner. The crust really was amazing, and the toppings, perfect.
After that, I spent the rest of the afternoon studying, blogging, and playing with photoshop. We didn't go anywhere, as we planned to go out for and early supper with dad.
Unfortunately, dad had some problems at work... (the computers decided they wanted extra one on one time, so they misbehaved. :P ;) ) So we wound up going to Rocksalt for supper as well. Can you tell I loved that cafe'? ;) We all had a great time over supper. Some of us tried new things, like Pumkin soup and seafood linguini, and others of us went back to comforting staples with a twist, like gourmet cheeseburgers. Everything was excellent and the time together quite fun.
To finish the day off in grand style, we all got Magnum Ice Cream bars for dessert. Then after dad got back to the apartment, watched Casablanca and the count of Monte Cristo.
It will be a day long remembered, and I feel so blessed in what God has done for me in my life so far, and look forward to serving Him in the years to come.

Good Photography... it comes not from a expensive camera.
It seems like the current fad right now in the digital photography world is what DSLR you have, with what lens, when you got it, the best deals for it, and more.
And if you don't have a DSLR... Well, you are not a real photographer. ;)
It is my opinion there are some more basic things one should know and use before even considering dropping a grand or so on a quality camera... Because a DSLR or an expensive camera does not a photographer make.
This post is meant to help you take better pictures, regardless of the camera you have. If you employ these techniques I have been taught by others, I can assure you that your pictures will not only look better, but you will have a more enjoyable time taking pictures.
Because that is what photography is all about. :)
I have used, and probably will always use, a Nikon Coolpix point-and-shoot camera. This is the one I have right now:
I like Nikon because they deliver the best quality for the price in my experience. I have tried panasonic, sony, and Cannon Brands in the $150-$200 range, and Nikon is what I always wound up going back to because of the superior Focusing abilities, and inclusion of features such extra wide lenses, ability to choose between auto and manual, and more.
I say all that only because if you are looking for a camera and don't know where to start... I recommend start with Nikon. :)
So, now that you have a camera in your hand, here are three things I have been taught over the years that will make anyone a better photographer with relative ease.
#1: Know your camera.
Your camera is a complicated piece of electronics, micro-gears, and computers. The fact digital cameras are so small, yet so powerful truly is amazing. Many people buy a cheap digital camera, set it on "Auto" and start clicking away.
While this will probably work outside without to much trouble, and inside with flash overexposing everything in site... If you really want good pictures, you need to know how your camera works. Basics such as exposure, ISO, Lighting balance, and more are all included in any camera. Learn how to change these and what they mean! The computer is not always going to get it right.
The better you know your camera and how it behaves in various conditions will enable you to be better prepared going into those conditions. This comes with experience, knowledge of basic terms, and knowing what you want you camera to do... then making the computer do it.
#2: Use the Rule of threes.
If you take any good photography class, you are going to hear about the rule of 3s. This is a super simple, yet powerful technique you can apply to any picture you are taking. Here is how it works...
Picture a Tic-Tac-Toe board on your camera screen. Wherever the lines intersect, those are the best places to put the subject in your picture. Unless you are shooting a super close macro shot, The subject should pretty much Never go in the dead center of your picture. It really is amazing how much better pictures look when taken with the rule of threes in mind.
#3 Editing.
Now, you have a solid picture on your camera. It isn't blurry, is taken with good composition, but looks rather bland as far as color goes. This is where a lot of people divide over digital photography. After image editing is a very powerful thing to use to make a good picture look great. There are many free programs out there to edit with. Some are simple like Picasa, others, quite powerful and complex, like GIMP. You don't have to have the latest $600 version of photoshop... (Though I must admit, it is quite nice) Those free programs often do everything one needs to do basic edits in order to enhance an image.
Here is a picture before:
As you can see, it has a decent amount of color, but it was cloudy and raining outside, so you can't quite see the actual color of the car.
Cropping the image, Applying a little more saturation, and increasing the contrast a little... (easy things to do in any editing program)
You now have a more accurate representation of what the car actually looked like.
It took 5 minutes, and you have a much better looking picture.
Not all images are easy to edit, but most are.

A Rose Among Thorns... Literally.
So just the other day I was working on my mac, when I looked out the window of our apartment here in Australia. I saw this one yellow yellow rose, in the midst of the huge and bare thorn bush on which it grew.
However, just like this rose was placed in the bush by God. We also can rest in the fact God has placed us in those trying times. To grow and strengthen us, as found in James 1.
Also, if you are finding yourself like a rose among thorns in the winter...
It is only for a season. :)

Bananagrams: A Quite Appeeling Game!
I have to tell you about the most addicting and fun new game our family has begun playing.
It is called Bananagrams.
Bananagrams is a word based game where the goal is to make your very own crossword puzzle before anyone else.
One does this with a random selection of 15-21 tiles (depending on the amount of players) from "the pile".
Then it is time to "split" meaning one flips over all their tiles and begins frantically, methodically, or (if you get all consonants like me) frustratingly try to begin making a word puzzle like below:
Don't worry, if you have rotten letters, you are allowed to swap em out, rearrange letters, words and more as the game progresses. The first person to finish when there are no titles remaining is the winner!
Sounds simple enough right?
I love this game because it doesn't take long at all, usually 15 minutes or so. It is also fast paced, and really gets your brain working in overdrive. Sometimes you come up with the most unusual words... Sometimes you slip up and mispell a word, which means you lose the round. :(
So there you have it, it really is scrabble on steroids. If you don't have this game, you should go out and get it. It is available at Target for $15 I believe.
